Getting the Planning Started!

So, this is the route we will be taking to Mongolia.

That means we will be driving through the following countries to our destination:

  • London
  • France
  • Belgium
  • Germany
  • France
  • Italy
  • Slovenia
  • Croatia
  • Hungary
  • Maybe Moldova
  • Romania
  • Ukraine
  • Russia
  • Kazakhstan
  • Russia
  • and finally Mongolia

The starting address is the Greenwood Estate Motor Circuit in Sussex or Goodwood Estate, Chichester, West Sussex, PO18 0PX.

The finishing address is somewhere in Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia. We just don't know y

Using Google Maps we worked it out that we would need the following amount of time on the road in each country based on the distance that we would have to cover, then potentially how long

Dynamic Map!

So I spent a little time in Google Maps configuring this little map for you to take a look at. We obviously can't commit to following the route exactly, but this would be our initial plan of attack!

I've added this to the page "Where are we now" linked at the top of this page. Hopefully I can learn how to edit it so that it shows where we are in the proceedings.
Let us know what you think!

Well looks like Iran's Out

So, slight confession, we originally starting thinking about taking this trip in November. We had a little idea about where we would like to go, and I said if we were to take a trip of a lifetime then I would like to go through the middle east, and in particular Iran/Iraq. So Turkey then Iran, then up towards Russia and Mongolia.

We checked the Tourist information and it said something along the lines of "its hardly as safe as Nice, France, but safe enough to travel". Bonza! we thought.

Until today, obviously we thought we'd better check again at the Australia government's tourist information on Iran and this is what it says:

We were a little shocked and disappointed to say the least, so we have tried the UK government's tourist information on Iran, and it was even worse!

With this in mind, and the fact that I'd not want to put Jess in any undue harm, we have given our travel plans a little bit of a reshuffle. We will now go through Romania, Ukraine, Russia and on through Kazakhstan to Mongolia!

Now we need to start planning!

So what's in a trip?

Guess you're kind of wondering what this once in a lifetime trip will entail. Well, if all goes to plan, it will take part in three stages.

Stage 1: Mongol Rally - July 13th 2013

We intend on travelling from London to Mongolia over the course of 4 weeks. We decided that if we were to do this trip of a lifetime, then we wanted to drive through the middle east and show people, and ourselves, that it isn't all as scary as it is made out on the news. Therefore we have chosen a route via Turkey and Iran, and up around the Himalayas to Mongolia.

The full country list is as follows: London, France, Belgium, Germany, Austria, Slovenia, Croatia, Serbia, Bulgaria, Turkey, Iran, Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan, Georgia, Russia Kazakhstan, Russia, and finally Mongolia.

Updated Trip!

We will be doing this via a car that has an engine less than 1200cc in size, but is less than 10 years old. Not easy.

For more information on the Mongol Rally go to the following URL.

Stage 2: South East Asia - Aug 24th 2013
This is the least planned section of the trip, as it will mean driving through China, and Google Maps doesn't seem to think you can drive through it. I'm sure we can, and we will.

If not, we could get to South East Asia for a little sunbathing and insect eating before heading back home to Australia, via Darwin!

Stage 3: Driving home to Sydney - Sept 24th 2013
We will likely fly into Darwin from Kuala Lumpar or Bangkok, unless we can catch a boat over, but I doubt Tony Abbott would let us back in that way.
Once we're in Darwin, we intend to try to relocate a campervan to Sydney via Townsville and Magnetic Island on the East Coast and down to Sydney via Brisbane.

The End: Sydney - Oct 24th 2013

Once we get to Sydney we compile all the clips and videos taken from the trip and post it online for everyone.
